In this 2-day intensive workshop, artist Charles Spitzack introduces participants to wood block printing, informed by the Japanese mokuhanga tradition. Spitzack will overview a brief history of mokuhanga, introduce techniques for safe wood relief cutting, and offer students a chance to create hand pulled prints using wood blocks that they design and carve during the class.
NOTE: Registration for this event includes two 5-hour class sessions, held on Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19, 12-5pm. Art materials will be supplied by the Bellevue Arts Museum.

About Charles Spitzack
Charles Spitzack was born in 1987 and grew up in the Twin Cities. He received his BFA in Print Arts and Drawing from Cornish College of the Arts. He teaches woodblock printmaking at Pratt Fine Arts Center and is represented by Davidson Galleries. Spitzack is known for his mokuhanga influenced woodblock prints of the human figure, animals, landscapes, urban scenes, and more. Drawing inspiration from daily life and his work as a carpenter, his art can be viewed as a response to the human condition, often focusing on communal aspirations, equality, labor rights, the plight of the working class, and other contemporary issues. His work has been shown extensively in the Pacific Northwest and internationally.
